Quick Guide to Flooring
So it's time for new flooring, huh? There can be any number of reasons why. Like the carpet in the living room is shot. Or the carpet tile laid in the kitchen last century has so many stains guests can no longer guess the original color. Or the vinyl in the bathroom is dated and embarrassing when you have anyone over for a visit.
Yet when it comes to replacing flooring you'll soon discover there are many choices. Yes choice is good. Within reason. But anymore the flooring options can also leave your head spinning. All this only makes the final decision harder. And given this is a choice you're going to live with for years to come can only add to the pressure to get it right.
So without considering a specific application let's look at how you can improve the first impression your floors make.
Why don't we start with wall to wall carpet? Because when you change that you change the look of the entire room. You'll likely want to strongly consider a stain resistant nylon. One with a dense pile that weighs in at around 45 ounces. But the key is the pad. Make sure you invest is a top notch pad since that is what will keep your carpet looking new longer. If you have to chintz, save on the carpet but never the pad.
Next there's the growing popularity of wood floors. Some find the glossy finish on laminates hard to resist. Engineered wood is another option. Of course if your wallet can handle it, few things compare to the classic beauty of hardwood.
You'll find there are more choices that go well beyond traditional oak or pine too. Some like the greener options like bamboo. Others prefer exotics or African hardwoods. Of course you should expect to pay more for some of these imports too.
You'll find ceramic tile has it's place too. Like in the kitchen, bath, or your entrance ways or anywhere water might be an issue. Stylish and durable the range of colors can boggle the mind.
If you are watching your pennies then you can't go wrong with vinyl. It is easy to install, easy to clean, long lasting and available in a host of different styles and patterns. You can lay down a solid color or opt for eye pleasing patterns. Vinyl comes in sheets or tiles. Some really appreciate the no wax finishes available anymore.
Then too any of these can always support an area rug. Which you can use to tie the room together or just as an accent. And area rugs are easier to change to freshen up a room without replacing the underlying flooring.
To be sure updating lackluster flooring will not necessarily be cheap. But it can instantly transform a room from ho hum to oh wow. Giving you years of beauty and enjoyment for your trouble.
